Europe's Economy Is on Its Way Back

Five signs that animal spirits are finally starting to stir in Europe s capital markets . This was the heading of a popular post yesterday. It reports five signs across Europe of a revival: a hugely popular IPO in Italy, a big retail deal in France, a perky purchasing managers' index in the eurozone, a corporate bond issue bonanza and even a big investment in Greece of Swiss retailer Dufry. Are these signs a coincidence? Let's take a look at some headlines in a well-known Dutch financial newspaper (FD) this morning: Purchasing power rises again in 2014 ; Greek banks out of the danger zone ; We have had the worst part of the crisis ; Southern European State Bonds score high in 2013 ; Number of houses sold, rises five months in a row . These headlines even make you more hopeful. I have a strong belief Europe will emerge. It is based on a mind shift I notice in European companies in my daily work. I am based in The Netherlands and worked all over Europe last year as an innovation facilitator in for example Berlin, Helsinki, Istanbul, Porto and Munich. Most European entrepreneurs and managers had to reorganize their companies, implement cost saving programs and lay off people. A lot of them had to do this even two or three times as the crisis persisted for more than five years and sales declined further and further. And you know what? Managers are really tired of the ad-hoc crisis management of the last years! A good manager will manage the bottom line (the results) of the business. A great manager though is also able to grow the top line (turnover) of the business! At the moment I notice a difference in mindset among managers in public companies and private companies. Managers in public companies in Europe are still under high pressure to write black figures at the end of the quarter. Their short-term focus keeps them in black figures which is great. But they are very reluctant to invest money to grow the business again. How different the mindset is in privately-owned companies! That's where I facilitate my innovation methodology to generate business cases for new products, services and business models mostly. Of course these private companies have been in a crisis too. They had to rethink their strategy. And often decided they had to enter new markets, new distribution channels and new customer segments to grow the top line. Their mindset is so much more entrepreneurial at the moment than in the big public companies. A decisive difference is that entrepreneurial private companies put their money where their mouth is: they invest in new business according to their vision for the longer term. I am sure that big public companies will invest in growing their business too in Europe. All the signs across Europe of a revival will help them to regain trust soon. After six years of economic downturn the economy in The Netherlands will grow again in 2014. All across Europe, entrepreneurship in companies is emerging. Europe's economy is on its way back.
